Some 300 invited guests from EU institutions and from associations and organisations of civil society, and international guests from Israel, South Africa and Eastern Europe, will hear a speech by theologian Friedrich Schorlemmer, peace prize-winner and a leading figure of the peaceful revolution of 1989, on the history and topicality of the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
Following this speech, Left Party MEP André Brie will moderate a debate on the lessons of the current crisis of capitalism and the need for a fundamentally new course for a social and democratic Europe, with Birgit Mahnkopf, Professor for European Social Policy at the Berlin College of Economics) and Norwegian trade unionist Asbjörn Wahl.
The cultural programme includes German and French songs by Barbara Thalheim and Jean Pacalet as well as a reading by Jan Bergrath, from his new European crime thriller Fatal Energy.
Background:
The Brussels office of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation has taken up the task of playing a part in the reformulation of the concept of Europe after the collapse of turbo-capitalism. The central issues are social justice, economic democracy, civil strategies for peace and security policy, and the fulfilment of participatory democracy in all areas of society. In cooperation with the offices and partners of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation in other regions of the world, the Brussels office will at the same time carry specific issues around the development of a just international society into the European debate.
